Comedians should focus on being funny, and not too focused on being offensive or not.
As a comedy critic. I have heard both sides of the argument of if comedians are being too offensive or not, and if there should be a line drawn with their content. My take on this is that the comedian should not be focusing on whether or not they are going to hurt someone's feelings, but be more focused on being funny, because that is what they are being paid to do. One comedian that have critiqued in the past, Konstantin Kisin, was recently expected to sign a contract promising to steer clear of a list of potentially “offensive” topics before playing a UK university gig. You could definitely tell that she was struggling to be as funny as she usually is, because of having to be careful of what she is saying. Now I’m not saying that comedians should or shouldn’t be offensive, I am saying that they need to do whatever is best to make sure their jokes are truly funny, and making the audience laugh. It is hard to think of many mainstream instances these days where comedians deliberately set out to wound an individual with their words, they are just doing their job trying to make the audience laugh. In fact, studies have shown, according to theconversation.com, that truly offensive humour is seldom actually funny, and that comedians realize that being so offensive will reduce their audience attendance and ratings. If the comedian is truly trying to naturally funny, they shouldn’t be offending too many people, and their humor ratings will be high.
